New on : RSAT not installing on Windows 8

If you get an error installing RSAT for Windows 8 on Windows 8, read on.

Neverending compatibility issues with Windows 8. When you try to install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 (download link) on Windows 8, you’ll get an error stating that “The update is not applicable to your computer”. Workaround is to extract the msi package and then install it with pkgmgr. Here is the procedure to install RSAT on Windows 8 64-bit:

  1. Create a new folder (in this example d:\rsat)
  2. Open command prompt as administrator (Shift + right click on cmd icon and choose Run as administrator)
  3. Type expand -f:* “D:\Downloads\Windows6.2-KB2693643-x64.msu” D:\RSAT (assuming source .msu is in D:\Downloads folder)
  4. Type pkgmgr /ip /m:D:\RSAT\Windows6.2-KB2693643-x64.cab to silently install the package
  5. Wait for 15 minutes, and then restart your computer. You should see RSAT icons on your Metro menu.

To install RSAT on Windows 8 32-bit, just change the filenames:

  1. Create a new folder (in this example d:\rsat)
  2. Open command prompt as administrator (Shift + right click on cmd icon and choose Run as administrator)
  3. Type expand -f:* “D:\Downloads\Windows6.2-KB2693643-x86.msu” D:\RSAT (assuming source .msu is in D:\Downloads folder)
  4. Type pkgmgr /ip /m:D:\RSAT\Windows6.2-KB2693643-x86.cab to silently install the package
  5. Wait for 15 minutes, and then restart your computer. You should see RSAT icons on your Metro menu.

The same solution can be applied for “Unspecified error: Installer encountered an error: 0×80004005″.

Thanks to Nick and Troy for the tip.
