New on : VMware ESXi – Question After Moving Or Copying VM

You might get the following question after moving or copying VM in VMware ESX/ESXi:

“msg.uuid.altered:This virtual machine might have been moved or copied. In order to configure certain management and networking features, VMware ESX needs to know if this virtual machine was moved or copied. If you don’t know, answer “I copied it”.
  • Cancel
  • I moved it
  • I copied it
What this asks you is whether you want to keep your UUID (universally unique identifier) for VM in question (“I moved it”) or you want the new UUID to be created (“I copied it”). If you are cloning the machine, you will want to create a new UUID. If you are certain that you just moved it, keep the UUID. Have in mind that when you change UUID of your Windows VM, you might break the licensing status and have to reactivate the license.
